Prostate cancer is a malignant condition of the
prostate gland which, in its early stages, produces no or few symptoms and has
consequently earned itself the dubious title of ‘the silent killer’. Prostate
cancer is the second most common form of malignancy in men, with over 12,000
new cases being identified each year. Most commonly, it is cancer of older age
with about half of new cases being identified in those aged over 75 years. In
this older age group, the cancer tends to be slow-growing and it may not prove
lethal within the normal life span of the individual. However, prostate cancer
claims several thousand lives each year among men aged over 65 years and there
is evidence that it is becoming more prevalent among younger age groups. Men
aged 50 years and over are considered to be at risk but it is not unknown among
those in their forties. Unfortunately, the disease appears to be more virulent
in younger men but it is curable if it is caught and treated at an early stage.
Symptoms of
prostate cancer may be few but when they do occur is similar of those of BENIGN
