Making Money From Interpreting

Because the demand for skilled interpreters far exceeds the number of qualified professionals, nationally certified interpreters are able to find work all over the world. Credentialed interpreters are constantly in demand in educational settings from pre-school through graduate school. These interpreters are part-time or full-time employees of their school district or university, and are often employed with benefits. Qualified interpreters are also in demand in medical, legal, mental health, theatrical, governmental, and religious settings, among others. Interpreters may be on staff in these settings, they may work through an interpreter referral agency, or they may be privately contracted
A fluent speaker of two or more languages can make money by interpreting a second language. Many businesses and government agencies use interpreters on a daily basis. You can also make more money if you become a Court Certified Interpreter. This type of work does require some flexibility. You also need to be professional and be able to maintain the confidentiality of conversation being interpreted.

1       Acquire strong command of the both languages to be interpreted. It is usually best to be a native speaker of both languages. A high level of training or education in the second language is also acceptable if the language is practiced on a daily basis.

2          Keep a good and current dictionary handy. Even the most experienced interpreters do not know every single word in any language.

3          Sign up with an interpreter firm. This may provide some financial assistance. It will also help you gain experience interpreting in person or over the phone.

4          Market yourself at every opportunity as a freelancer. Distribute business cards and fliers. If you are working for an interpreter agency, check its policy on soliciting yourself to the firm's clients.

5          Become a court certified interpreter. This will increase your income.

6          Build clientèle by taking on small budget projects. You never know when a client may have bigger interpretation needs down the road.
