Short codes are special telephone numbers, significantly shorter than full telephone numbers,  that can be used to address SMS and MMS messages from mobile phones or fixed phones. They are also known as short numbers. They are a new, easy way for media outlets, brand owners and others to

use mobile phones to reach and interact with target audience. Short Codes are based on text messaging, a service available on almost all digital mobile phones. Instead of a 10-digit number, Short Codes are five or six digits in length, and the digits can correspond to a brand name or phrase. They are easy to remember and easy to incorporate into a marketing campaign

Short codes are designed to be easier to read and remember than normal telephone numbers. Like telephone numbers, short codes are unique to each operator at the technological level. Therefore, providers generally have agreements to avoid overlaps. In some countries, such as the United States, some classes of numbers are inter-operator (U.S. inter-operator numbers are called Common Short Codes). Short codes are widely used for value-added services such as television voting, ordering

0 code can be billed at a higher rate than a standard SMS and may even subscribe a customer to a reoccurring monthly service that will be added to their mobile phone bill until they text e.g. the word "STOP" to terminate the service.

There are two types of short codes:

1: Shared short code

2: Dedicated short code

Shared Short Codes

Shared short codes are a low-cost and quick solution for a client expecting low to moderate volume of messages. With these short codes, you share a short code number with other customers and use keywords to direct messages to your particular application and / or trigger a specific response. Another name for shared short codes is shared profit making code

Keywords can also be used to reinforce the Company/ brand name, as the mobile user would have to type the special keyword in order to interact with the company / brand.

For example, CUSTOMER A configured a keyword called “TVGAME” to 56011 such that before a user can use it,

they MUST first type TVGAME then follow by any other information.

For CUSTOMER B, they may configured BUYLAND to that same 56011 follow by any other information, and users

must first also text BUYLAND and other information to 56011.

That short code number 56011 is now referred to as a SHARED NUMBER! It’s a shared profit making number  i.e

the CUSTOMERS make profit (ONLY FROM THE SUBSCRIBERS TO HIS/HER KEYWORD )from using this shared number

and the end user (people sending the SMS to 56011) always paid for the amount of delivery the SMS.

Dedicated Short Codes

Dedicated short codes are for clients who intend to provide a range of different mobile services, expect a high monthly volume of messages or want to offer more complex 2-way services. It is also known as custom profit making.

This type does not require a KEYWORD before the account can be identified. Example, a user can just send NAME

AND LOCATION to 22222 and the short code server will identified it as a CUSTOMER A short code.

A customer can set the billing rate for the dedicated short to a particular amount, e.g N700 after the delivery rate e.g N300, the customer has a profit then of N400.

Messages to the short codes are MO billed i.e. the user is charged once they send a message to the short code. Clients can choose their dedicated number and tariff from a range of our short codes.

Short code marketing can be fun if you know how to manipulate you audience to maximize profit! Yes I meant it. If you as a person could reason how the giant in the business are are making their money and yet they are still in the business, it’s because they know their ways of caging their audience or let me call it their customer so as to avoid ambiguity. To make real money is not so easy as they portrate it to be, if you actualy want to make money and you wish to joing the mover and shaker of this so called world or earth I think you need more than sitting on the fence, if you can not beat them you joing them, but my candid advise for you is to beat them and rubbish them and lead them so that they will keep coming to you.
