Inverted
nipples lie flat against the aureola or are even turned inwards and appear to
lie within a fold. This is due to the milk ducts being too short to allow the
nipples to protrude and is only a problem if the woman wishes to breastfeed or
is unhappy with her appearance.
The nipples can be encouraged to protrude by
gentle manipulation or by wearing a suction device such as a nipple shed within
a bra. Surgery to correct inverted nipples can be performed but it is usually
not possible to breastfeed following this procedure.
