At least five people have been injured, two seriously near to the Nachlat Binyamin Mall. It was later described as being an accident, but tensions have been running high in the country ahead of Trump's visit to the country.
The incident came almost exactly as Air Force One touched down at Ben Gurion International Airport on Monday (22 May) for a visit to Israel and the Palestinian territories.
Trump
has handed son-in-law Jared Kushner and long-time business lawyer Jason
Greenblatt the task of charting the course toward a peace process between
Israel and Palestine.
The
White House-driven effort is a sharp shift from the practice of US previous
administrations that typically gave secretaries of state those reins.
Having
declared that finding a solution to the Israel-Palestine conflict is
"maybe not as difficult as people have thought", Trump will make his
first visit to Israel with few concrete ideas of solving a problem that has
vexed presidents for decades.
The
trip is the second leg of a Trump's first foreign excursion as president after spending the weekend in
Saudi Arabia.
Trump
was greeted by the Israeli President Reuven Rivlin as well as Prime Minister
Benjamin Netanyahu.
Trump said "Hello my good friend" with
the Israeli PM replying "welcome my good friend."
