The blast killed 15 and wounded more than 24 people in
the busy Karrada district. Isis claimed responsibility for the attack, which
took place in the first days of the Islamic fasting month of Ramadan.
During this month, Baghdad's cafes and restaurants are packed in the evenings,
as Muslims gather together to break their fast.
The video shows the moment the explosion struck, sparking
a huge fireball and forcing pedestrians and cars to flee for cover. Photos and
videos shared on social media revealed the extent of the devastation, depicting
bloodied and wounded people crying for help among the burning wreckage.
Several hours after the attack, another car bomb exploded
during rush hour near the Public Pension Office in Baghdad's Shawaka area. The
bomb killed at least nine and wounded 15 people, according to Iraqi police.
During Ramadan last year, a fatal suicide bombing struck
another part of Karrada, killing almost 300 people. The attack, also claimed by
Isis, was the deadliest to hit the Iraqi capital in 13 years of war.
The latest attack comes as Iraqi forces continue to attack Isis
militants in their northern stronghold of Mosul. Iraqi commanders
warn that insurgent attacks may become more frequent if Isis suffers
significant military defeats.
